Chowbus raises US$81M to build AI platform for culturally rooted independent restaurants

While the company built its reputation around integrated POS and management tools for Asian and immigrant-owned restaurants, leadership now intends to expand into operational services including marketing automation, accounting workflows, supply ordering, and insurance.

NORTH AMERICA – Chowbus, a Chicago-based restaurant technology company, has raised US$81 million in new funding led by Prysm Capital and Left Lane Capital.

The investment arrives as the company reports more than US$120 million in annual recurring revenue, representing ninefold growth over four years, and roughly US$4 billion in annualized processed transaction volume across restaurants in all 50 U.S. states and Canada.

From Delivery Platform to Full-Service Operating Partner

The funding marks a strategic evolution for Chowbus.

While the company built its reputation around integrated POS and management tools for Asian and immigrant-owned restaurants, leadership now intends to expand into operational services including marketing automation, accounting workflows, supply ordering, and insurance.

These categories represent significantly larger restaurant budgets than core software subscriptions, allowing Chowbus to position itself less as a vendor and more as a comprehensive operating partner.

Serving an Underserved Segment

Founded in 2016 by Linxin Wen and CTO Suyu Zhang, Chowbus initially focused on helping Asian restaurants improve digital ordering and delivery capabilities.

The founders recognized that many culturally specific restaurant businesses were underserved by mainstream technology vendors, particularly in marketing tools, language support, and localized customer acquisition.

Today, the Asian restaurant sector alone accounts for roughly 16% of the total U.S. restaurant market, projected to reach approximately US$240 billion by the end of 2026, with 135% expansion over the past 25 years despite economic headwinds.

AI-Powered Tools Level the Playing Field

Wen pointed to the early success of the company’s AI Digital Ads product as evidence that artificial intelligence can help independent restaurants compete against national chains with larger marketing budgets.

The tool automates local advertising campaigns using restaurant transaction data and customer behavior insights to optimize targeting and spending.

The company now plans to build a next-generation AI restaurant platform capable of supporting multiple operational functions from a single environment.

Navigating a Crowded Competitive Landscape

The restaurant technology sector has become increasingly crowded, with major POS providers like Square, Toast, and Lightspeed expanding into payroll, marketing automation, and inventory management.

Meanwhile, delivery giants DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Olo have moved up the value chain with merchant analytics and advertising products.

Chowbus differentiates through vertical focus on culturally specific restaurant communities that rely on word-of-mouth marketing and community networks rather than mainstream chain operations.
