The JTC now serves as the primary mechanism for translating agreements into tangible outcomes for travelers and businesses.

SOUTH AFRICA – Kenya and South Africa have officially launched the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) to operationalize their 2021 Memorandum of Understanding, marking a major milestone in bilateral tourism cooperation.

The committee, established following the signing of the JTC report and implementation plan by country representatives, is designed to create powerful synergies through scholarship exchanges, information sharing, tourism investment promotion, cultural exhibitions, and strengthened private sector collaboration across both nations.

Formal Launch Sets the Stage

Tourism Secretary David Gitonga and South African Tourism Director General Nkhumeleni Victor Vele officiated the event, underscoring high-level commitment to deepening ties in one of Africa’s most critical economic sectors.

The JTC now serves as the primary mechanism for translating agreements into tangible outcomes for travelers and businesses.

What the Partnership Delivers

The JTC framework focuses on boosting two-way tourism flows.

Scholarship exchanges will enable students to gain hospitality experience across markets.

Information sharing between tourism boards will sharpen marketing efforts and visitor insights. Cultural exhibitions will showcase both nations’ rich heritage to international audiences.

Investment Opportunities Take Center Stage

Tourism investment promotion forms a core pillar, with South African hotel groups eyeing East African expansion and Kenyan investors looking toward Southern Africa benefiting from streamlined facilitation.

Private sector engagement ensures industry voices help shape the partnership’s direction.

Strengthening Africa’s Tourism Powerhouses

South Africa welcomed approximately 8.5 million international arrivals in 2025, while Kenya recorded over 2.4 million visitors.

The JTC aims to capture more long-haul tourists seeking multi-country African itineraries combining South Africa’s cosmopolitan cities with Kenya’s world-famous safari experiences and warm Indian Ocean coastline.

Private Sector Poised to Benefit

Tour operators, hotel groups, and airlines on both sides stand to gain from smoother bilateral cooperation.

Reduced administrative barriers, coordinated marketing campaigns, and joint trade missions will create new opportunities for businesses serving travelers between East and Southern Africa.

A Model for Continental Cooperation

The Kenya-South Africa JTC exemplifies bilateral collaboration needed to advance African Union goals and boost intra-continental travel, offering a template for other nations seeking to capture more value from global tourism flows while strengthening pan-African ties.
