SOUTH AFRICA – The Africa Business Tourism & MICE Masterclass will hold its ninth edition from 9 to 10 April 2026, convening destination marketing organizations and professional conference organizers as the continent’s business events sector enters a new growth cycle.
Organized by UN Tourism-affiliated African Tourism Partners, the forum responds to rising international demand for intra-African travel and large-scale business events, offering structured training on bidding processes, strategic event management, and return on investment evaluation.
Professionalizing the MICE Value Chain
The 2026 edition focuses on strengthening operational knowledge across the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions sector through evidence-based sessions and technical training modules.
Participants will explore the transition from traditional event logistics toward strategic management models, including approaches to measuring ROI and the operational standards required for convention centers and related infrastructure.
The curriculum also addresses destination competitiveness within the global business tourism market, examining how to provide culturally rich experiences that align with corporate objectives for incentive travel programs.
Cross-Border Collaboration Takes Center Stage
The masterclass facilitates policy dialogue and networking among stakeholders from hospitality, aviation, and academic sectors, with attendance limited to maintain a focused B2B environment.
Discussions will center on strengthening collaboration among destinations, event organizers, and infrastructure operators involved in Africa’s business tourism ecosystem.
The forum arrives as African nations including South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda emerge as frontrunners in the continent’s MICE industry, each offering distinct advantages from modern convention facilities to rich cultural experiences.
Momentum Builds Following Meetings Africa Success
The masterclass follows February’s Meetings Africa 2026 in Johannesburg, which attracted buyers from 53 countries, 375 hosted buyers, and 325 exhibitors, with over 6,400 business meetings confirmed.
That event’s economic contribution to South Africa’s GDP nearly doubled from 371 million rand in 2023 to 690 million rand (approx. US$37.4 million) in 2025, supporting the creation of more than 2,600 jobs.
Such numbers reflect international business events’ critical role in boosting local economies while promoting African destinations as competitive players on the global stage.
