The deal grants Southern Sun total operational control over the prestigious dual-property complex, consolidating its dominant presence in Sandton, known as Africa’s “richest square mile.”

SOUTH AFRICA – Southern Sun has acquired a majority stake in the iconic Sandton Sun & Towers hotel complex from Pareto Limited in a landmark transaction valued at approximately R1.3 billion (approx. US$69.3 million).
This strategic move, transitioning Southern Sun from hotel manager to primary owner, represents a massive vote of confidence in the recovery and future of South Africa’s premier business tourism and luxury travel district.
Consolidating Control Over a Flagship Asset
The deal grants Southern Sun total operational control over the prestigious dual-property complex, consolidating its dominant presence in Sandton, known as Africa’s “richest square mile.”
The acquisition follows a substantial R200 million (approx. US$10.6 million) refurbishment of the “Towers” wing, formerly the InterContinental Sandton, bringing it in line with the luxury standards of the adjoining Sandton Sun.
This unified ownership and recent upgrade are strategically timed to capture the surging return of high-value international business travel and tourism to Johannesburg.
A Catalyst for MICE and Economic Growth
The investment directly strengthens Sandton’s position as the continent’s leading hub for the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector.
With the Sandton Convention Centre at its heart, a seamlessly managed and upgraded hotel complex enhances the district’s appeal for large-scale international events.
Economically, the transaction provides stability for thousands of hospitality jobs and creates opportunities for local suppliers.
It signals strong domestic corporate belief in the tourism sector’s resilience, encouraging further foreign investment and supporting national strategies to increase visitor arrivals and expenditure.
Enhancing the Gateway to Southern Africa
As Johannesburg remains the primary air gateway to Southern Africa, the quality of its core accommodation directly impacts the visitor experience for the entire region.
Southern Sun’s deepened commitment, which also includes operating the nearby Garden Court and Southern Sun Sandton, allows for faster implementation of service innovations, technology upgrades, and sustainable practices.
This consolidation builds a brand of trust and reliability for tourists and business travelers, ensuring Sandton continues to meet the evolving demands of the global luxury market and solidifies its status as a world-class destination.
