UAE/JAPAN – Etihad Airways will deploy its iconic Airbus A380 Superjumbo on the Abu Dhabi to Tokyo Narita International Airport route beginning June 16, 2026, timed for the busy summer travel season.
This marks the introduction of the airline’s eighth A380 back into service following an extended storage period.
The addition of the A380 significantly increases passenger capacity on this route, accommodating the high demand for business and leisure travel between the UAE, East Asia, and Africa.
The aircraft offers a full suite of cabin classes including Business Class suites, Premium Economy, and Economy.
Unique to Etihad’s A380 is The Residence, a luxurious three-room private suite with a living room, bedroom, and bathroom catered to ultra-premium travelers.
Every seat features individual entertainment screens offering a wide library of movies, music, and games.
Etihad’s Abu Dhabi hub connects travelers from African cities such as Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Cairo efficiently to Tokyo and other major Asian cities including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul.
This service enhances tourism and business travel linkages between Africa and East Asia, stimulating growth opportunities in trade, investment, and MICE tourism sectors.
The additional capacity ensures passengers experience superior comfort and convenience.
Etihad Airways achieved a milestone in July 2025 by accepting five new aircraft in one month, the busiest delivery period in its 22-year history.
This included the first Airbus A321LR, two Boeing 787 Dreamliners, one A350-1000, and one A320ceo, boosting capacity for short- and long-haul routes.
The A321LR features premium cabins with First Suites, lie-flat Business seats, and enhanced Economy with in-seat entertainment.
These additions support 16 new destinations launched in 2025 alone, targeting 38 million annual passengers by 2030.
A $200 billion Boeing deal secured 28 widebodies—14 B787s and 14 777Xs—announced during President Trump’s UAE visit. Deliveries continue at 20-22 aircraft yearly through 2026, nearly doubling the fleet to 180+ by 2032.
Etihad Engineering expands maintenance lines from 2-3 to 6-8 by 2026-27, accommodating cabin reconfigurations and growth. AerCap leased the first of 20 A321LRs in July, enhancing narrowbody efficiency.
These investments modernize the fleet—average age 8.7 years—for fuel savings, sustainability, and premium service. Network expansion reaches Asia, Australia, North America, and Africa, solidifying Abu Dhabi as a global hub.
