Oman signs agreement to transform Sumharam Archaeological Park into global tourism destination

The development will introduce integrated tourism facilities including luxury hospitality establishments, culture and heritage venues, and launch points for nature adventures.

OMAN – Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has signed an agreement with Sumharam Tourism Investment Company to develop and operate Sumharam Archaeological Park at the Khor Rori site in Dhofar Governorate, transforming the UNESCO World Heritage city into a global tourist destination.

The project aims to develop the centuries-old city of Sumharam, one of the Land of Frankincense sites, into a destination that combines historical grandeur with natural beauty, while upgrading Dhofar’s status as one of the region’s most prominent tourism hotspots.

Ancient History Meets Modern Hospitality

The development will introduce integrated tourism facilities, including luxury hospitality establishments, culture and heritage venues, and launch points for nature adventures.

Visitors will find restaurants serving Omani cuisine, traditional crafts centres showcasing local artistry, and cultural events that reflect the authenticity of Omani identity.

The project carefully balances preservation of the archaeological site’s integrity with creating experiences that draw international travelers seeking authentic cultural encounters.

Economic Ripples Across Dhofar

Beyond tourism infrastructure, the agreement focuses on generating tangible benefits for local communities.

The project will support small and medium enterprises in the tourism sector, promote investment, and create direct and indirect employment opportunities for Dhofar residents.

This community-centered approach ensures that local populations participate in and benefit from the economic activities generated by the archaeological park’s development.

UNESCO Heritage Status Adds Global Appeal

Sumharam forms part of the Land of Frankincense sites, recognized by UNESCO for their historical significance in the ancient frankincense trade that connected Oman to civilizations across the Mediterranean, India, and beyond.

The city’s strategic location at Khor Rori, where a freshwater lagoon meets the Arabian Sea, offers visitors a rare combination of archaeological wonder and dramatic coastal scenery.

The development aims to make this UNESCO heritage more accessible while preserving the site’s integrity for future generations.

Strategic Investment in Cultural Tourism

The agreement was signed by HE Sayyid Said bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and Hilal bin Khalfan Al Busaidi, Chairman of Sumharam Tourism Investment Company.

This partnership reflects Oman’s broader strategy of leveraging its rich cultural heritage to diversify tourism offerings and attract high-value travelers seeking authentic experiences.

By developing Sumharam as a world-class archaeological park, Oman strengthens its position as a premier destination for cultural tourism in the Middle East.
