Aedas designs 100-key Capella Diriyah blending Najdi heritage with stargazing suites

Capella Diriyah represents the convergence of Saudi Arabia’s giga-project momentum with ultra-luxury branded residences and hotels targeting the highest-spending global travellers.

SAUDI ARABIA – Global architecture practice Aedas has secured the design contract for Capella Diriyah, a 100-key ultra-luxury hotel within the Northern District of the giga-development home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At Turiaf, the birthplace of the Kingdom.

The Capella Diriyah blend Najdi heritage with modern luxury with the design drawing deeply from Najdi architectural traditions, echoing the solid-void rhythm, earthen palette and spatial hierarchy that convey protection and continuity.

Organized around a sequence of courtyards, the hotel transitions from vibrant public zones to intimate retreats, reflecting the region’s social fabric while preserving privacy.

On the other hand, geometric patterns inspired by Najdi architecture bring movement to the design, with stone patterns playing with sunlight to cast shifting shadows that bring heritage to life throughout the day.

In addition, the landscape draws inspiration from natural wadis and contours, featuring water elements creating sensory journeys through the grounds.

Further, a grid of date palms provides dappled shade while stone sourced from the region reinforces authenticity with native planting shaping an oasis-like atmosphere connected to Diriyah’s ecology.

The project incorporates dedicated stargazing spaces. Open-air terraces, balconies and select rooms with retractable roofs give guests the opportunity to connect with stars from their suites, adding a memorable layer to their stay.

Ignacio Gomez, Global Design Principal at Aedas, explained: “The landscape is influenced by the Wadi and its natural contours. A series of water features creates a sensory journey through the hotel grounds”.

Capella Diriyah represents the convergence of Saudi Arabia’s giga-project momentum with ultra-luxury branded residences and hotels targeting the highest-spending global travellers.

The property also serves as a cultural landmark bridging the Kingdom’s storied past with future-oriented luxury travel. This further demonstrates how heritage can drive premium valuation.

By celebrating Najdi identity through contemporary craftsmanship, Capella Diriyah becomes a destination that redefines luxury travel in Saudi Arabia, shaped by history and designed for the future.

More importantly, the project offers lessons in authentic place-making where cultural continuity and environmental responsibility drive both guest experience and asset value.
