Zanzibar hijacks London’s iconic red buses for global tourism push

Branded buses roll out from Shepherd’s Bush Depot, traversing high-traffic Route 94 through central London’s premier landmarks, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Oxford Street, and Marble Arch, before heading west to Acton.

ZANZIBAR/UK – Zanzibar has launched its inaugural “Visit Zanzibar” campaign on London’s famous red buses to target millions of travelers.

Campaign Launch and Diplomatic Origins

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) unveiled this groundbreaking initiative yesterday, inaugurated by Tanzania’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, Mr. Mbelwa Kairuki.

This strategic outdoor advertising effort directly stems from Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi’s April 2025 diplomatic mission to London, where he advocated for intensified global marketing partnerships to elevate the archipelago’s profile on the world stage.

Strategic Bus Route Visibility

Branded buses roll out from Shepherd’s Bush Depot, traversing high-traffic Route 94 through central London’s premier landmarks, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Oxford Street, and Marble Arch, before heading west to Acton.

This positioning ensures daily exposure to London’s 20 million annual international visitors plus local commuters, transforming routine journeys into prime advertising moments for spice island allure.

Ambassador’s Vision for Market Penetration

Ambassador Kairuki highlighted London’s role as a vital global travel nexus linking Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa.

He noted that the iconic bus format offers unmatched visibility, marking Zanzibar’s first dedicated London outdoor campaign to position the destination as a premium choice for cultural immersion, heritage exploration, and sun-soaked beach escapes, while deepening UK-Tanzania tourism collaboration.

ZCT Leadership Perspective

ZCT Executive Secretary Arif Abbas Manji described the activation as a historic milestone in the commission’s international branding strategy, poised to amplify economic benefits through heightened visitor arrivals and sustained investment flows into hospitality infrastructure.

UK Market Priority and Tourism Context

The UK ranks as a core source market for Zanzibar, which approached one million annual visitors in 2025 amid Stone Town’s UNESCO glow, prison island safaris, and Mnemba atoll dives.

This campaign capitalizes on London’s 40 million total passengers yearly across bus networks, blending visibility with narrative, pristine sands, Swahili architecture, clove-scented air, to convert awareness into bookings.

Enhanced flights via Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines further enable long-haul feasibility.

Expected Outcomes and Regional Synergies

ZCT anticipates measurable uplift in UK arrivals, complementing Tanzania’s mainland safaris for circuit tourism.

The campaign reinforces Zanzibar’s ascent from niche hideaway to mainstream contender, leveraging London’s cosmopolitan pulse to drive occupancy across 500+ hotels and spice tours, ensuring year-round vibrancy beyond peak seasons.
