Sunshine Coast Council greenlights US$100.5M Crowne Plaza Development in Maroochydore

Maroochydore is facing a severe hotel room shortfall, needing more than 2,400 extra beds, about 10 additional properties, to keep up with rapidly rising visitor numbers.

AUSTRALIA – Sunshine Coast Council has approved a AUD 150 million (US$100.5 million) investment for a new Crowne Plaza hotel with 180 rooms and 24 luxury apartments in Maroochydore, with construction slated to commence in April 2026.

Tackling Regional Accommodation Gaps

Maroochydore grapples with a critical shortage of hotel rooms, requiring over 2,400 additional beds—equivalent to roughly 10 new properties—to accommodate surging tourist inflows.

This initiative leverages the council’s Accommodation Hotel Incentive Measures to lure upscale brands, securing long-term tourism viability.

State-of-the-Art Amenities and Layout

The hotel boasts a 30-metre pool, spa facilities, fitness center, sauna, and secure parking. Culinary highlights include an all-day dining outlet, a 160-seat signature restaurant, and an outdoor pool bar.

Adjacent luxury apartments, sized 110-280 sqm, target extended-stay investors and high-end leisure seekers.

Catalyzing Economic Momentum

Construction phases will spawn substantial employment, transitioning into sustained operational roles. The property elevates MICE capabilities, luring conferences and events while amplifying leisure appeal for domestic and international visitors, thereby invigorating local commerce.

Positioning for Tourism Ascendancy

This landmark bolsters Maroochydore’s stature as Queensland’s premier destination, blending business infrastructure with residential allure to drive year-round prosperity.

Sunshine Coast Council has championed multiple tourism and hospitality initiatives beyond the Maroochydore Crowne Plaza to solidify the region’s appeal.

In 2025, the council allocated US$80 million for the Caloundra City Centre Revitalization, featuring a 120-room boutique hotel, waterfront promenade, and cultural precinct to draw 500,000 annual visitors.

The US$50 million Mooloolaba Beachfront Upgrade introduced luxury glamping pods, enhanced boardwalks, and a seaside events pavilion, boosting occupancy 25% in shoulder seasons.

Noosa Heads’ US$35 million Eco-Resort Partnership with local operators added 80 sustainable villas integrated with national park trails, targeting eco-tourists.

Airport expansions at Sunshine Coast Airport included US$120 million for a new terminal and international gates, accommodating larger jets and projecting 3 million passengers by 2028.

The council’s AUD 25 million Digital Tourism Platform employs AI for personalized itineraries, driving 15% booking uplift.

These investments, totaling over US$310 million, align with the 2032 Olympic bid, emphasizing MICE, eco-luxury, and infrastructure to capture 20% more domestic/international spend, positioning Sunshine Coast as Queensland’s premier gateway.
