SOUTH AFRICA/BRAZIL – Leading Brazilian airline Latam Airlines has announced a new direct service connecting São Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport (GRU) with Cape Town International Airport (CPT), set to begin in September 2026 with three weekly flights.
This route marks the first direct South American carrier flight to Cape Town, opening significant opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.
Powered by Wesgro through Cape Town Air Access, the new service is expected to boost economic ties and facilitate greater passenger traffic between Brazil and South Africa.
Passenger numbers between South America and Cape Town have grown steadily, with an 8% increase in two-way travelers in 2025, reaching 41,000 from January to August.
Volumes are projected to approach pre-pandemic levels of just under 70,000 by year-end.
Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro and Cape Town Air Access spokesperson, highlighted that “this milestone directly supports our strategy to unlock access to high-growth markets like Brazil. The direct flights will expand Cape Town’s global reach and stimulate meaningful economic impact via trade, investment, and tourism.”

Dr. Ivan Meyer, Western Cape’s Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism, emphasized the route’s benefits: “This connection will drive tourism, broaden trade possibilities, and attract investments, reinforcing the Western Cape as a globally connected destination for business and leisure.”
Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, described the flight as a “game-changer” for Cape Town, creating a robust south-to-south corridor supporting tourism, business growth, and cultural exchange.
He praised the Air Access partnership for facilitating this opportunity, noting its positive impact on jobs and competitiveness.
