Uber partners with Flytrex to launch groundbreaking drone delivery service for Uber Eats

The new service integrates Flytrex’s FAA-approved autonomous drones, among only four authorized for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, with Uber’s advanced global logistics platform.

USA – Uber Technologies has partnered with Flytrex, an established autonomous drone delivery provider, marking Uber’s first investment in drone delivery technology.

This collaboration aims to introduce fully integrated drone delivery for Uber Eats, launching pilot services in select US markets by the end of 2025.

The new service combines Flytrex’s FAA-authorized autonomous drones, one of only four providers allowed to operate Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, with Uber’s advanced global logistics platform.

This integration creates a seamless, end-to-end delivery system designed for speed, safety, scalability, and efficiency.

Flytrex brings extensive operational expertise, having completed over 200,000 meal deliveries in the US so far, predominantly in suburban areas.

The partnership will enable Uber Eats customers to benefit from faster food deliveries that reduce reliance on traditional vehicles and help lower traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Sarfraz Maredia, President of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery at Uber, highlighted how autonomous drones represent the future of food delivery, “With Flytrex, we’re expanding our delivery network beyond cars, bikes, and couriers to include drones, reshaping how essentials move through cities.”

By adding aerial deliveries to its multimodal logistics ecosystem, Uber plans significant gains in last-mile delivery speed and cost optimization.

The drone delivery pilot is expected to complement existing ground operations and sidewalk robots already in Uber’s toolkit.

Flytrex’s drones employ cutting-edge safety systems to operate alongside manned aircraft while abiding by FAA-certified standards.

This safety-first approach enhances public trust and regulatory compliance, key factors for broader adoption.

This initiative marks Uber’s return to experimenting with drone delivery after an initial trial in 2019 with Uber Elevate, which did not proceed commercially due to regulatory and operational challenges at the time.

The rollout of drone delivery aligns with rising consumer demands for rapid, contactless, and eco-friendly delivery services, underscoring the competitive nature of the food delivery market as companies innovate relentlessly.

Uber’s investment in Flytrex is an important leap toward accelerating the development and deployment of autonomous drone delivery worldwide, potentially transforming urban logistics and setting new benchmarks for the foodservice industry.

As the pilot launches this year, customers in select urban and suburban areas will soon experience the convenience of nearly instantaneous food delivery via drone, opening exciting possibilities for future scalability across markets.
