Just Eat Takeaway.com partners with RIVR to pilot autonomous food delivery robots in Zurich

The RIVR robot is built to operate autonomously in urban settings, using advanced sensors and AI to navigate safely and deliver efficiently at ground level.

SWITZERLAND – Just Eat Takeaway.com has partnered with Swiss robotics company RIVR to trial the use of autonomous ground robots for food deliveries in Switzerland.

The pilot programme will launch in Zurich, where the RIVR robot will be responsible for delivering orders from the local restaurant Zekis World.

This partnership marks Just Eat Takeaway.com as the first on-demand delivery service in Europe to experiment with hybrid robotics that incorporate physical artificial intelligence.

The RIVR robot is designed to navigate urban environments autonomously, combining advanced sensors and AI to ensure safe and efficient deliveries on ground level.

Its compact size allows it to move along sidewalks and bike lanes, interacting seamlessly with pedestrians and other city elements.

This innovative approach seeks to enhance delivery speed and reduce operational costs while improving sustainability by lowering reliance on traditional vehicle-based deliveries that contribute to traffic congestion and emissions.

Starting in Zurich, the pilot will allow both companies to test the efficacy of robot-assisted delivery in a real-world setting.

The data and insights gathered will help optimize robotic navigation algorithms and delivery processes for future expansion across Swiss cities.

Just Eat Takeaway.com’s adoption of hybrid robotics underscores its commitment to leading technological innovation within the food delivery market.

The physical AI component allows the robot to autonomously make decisions based on environmental changes and obstacles ensuring reliable service.

Zekis World will serve as a key partner in the pilot, providing a steady stream of food orders and collaborating on user experience improvements for robotic delivery.

Customers will benefit from a novel, contactless delivery method particularly suited to the ongoing demand for convenient, safe services.

Compared to fully human-operated deliveries, autonomous robots have the potential to minimize human error while maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene.

Industry experts view such pilot programmes as critical stepping stones toward integration of robotics in last-mile logistics, promising broader adoption as technology matures and regulatory frameworks develop.

The collaboration between Just Eat Takeaway.com and RIVR reflects a growing trend in Europe toward smart urban mobility and sustainable delivery solutions, meeting evolving consumer preferences and environmental goals.

As this project progresses, it could set standards for the commercial use of advanced robotics in food delivery services across cities worldwide.
