The key discussions were held during the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 in Algiers, where South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamal Rezig, outlined their joint vision to enhance connectivity.

SOUTH AFRICA/ALGERIA – South Africa and Algeria have taken decisive steps to renew suspended air services and create additional cargo and passenger routes, driving enhanced economic cooperation.

This renewed partnership follows a bilateral agreement focused on lowering tariffs, streamlining customs, and liberalising air transport markets between the two nations.

The pivotal discussions took place at the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 in Algiers, where South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Kamal Rezig, elaborated on their shared vision to strengthen connectivity.

Central to their dialogue was implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Economic Cooperation signed in December 2024, which lays the foundation for expanded collaboration in aviation, trade, and infrastructure.

Officials underscore that efficient and reliable air links are fundamental to broader strategies aiming to stimulate intra-African trade and position the continent as a prime destination for both regional and international tourism.

Renewing air services is expected to amplify business exchanges and cultural ties between the two economic powerhouses.

Minister Tau highlighted the strategic role of the MoU as a framework from which additional bilateral agreements on trade and investment will stem. To maintain momentum, he proposed establishing a Joint Trade and Investment Committee to facilitate regular dialogue and cooperation.

Minister Rezig emphasized the robust and strategic partnership between Algeria and South Africa, noting the countries’ commitment to exploring expanded opportunities across multiple sectors such as oil and gas, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, agriculture, and aviation.

The air services renewal aligns with the Continental Free Trade Area’s vision to create a liberalised and unified air transport market, enhancing connectivity and lowering costs for passengers and businesses across Africa.

Experts assert that this cooperation will decrease travel times and operational costs, providing a competitive advantage for both countries and supporting improved logistics along key trade corridors.

The initiative marks a significant milestone towards stronger Africa-wide economic integration and connectivity, showcasing South Africa and Algeria’s leadership roles in continental development.

Their efforts contribute meaningfully to unlocking greater trade volumes, tourism growth, and infrastructure development across Africa.
