The City Tourism initiative aims to highlight the cultural, historical, and lifestyle attractions of urban centers, enhancing their appeal to both international visitors and local communities.

BOTSWANA _ The Government of Botswana has partnered with the University of Botswana (UB) on a City Tourism pilot initiative launched on September 4.
This collaboration aims to elevate Botswana’s urban centres, with a particular focus on Gaborone, as key tourism destinations.
During a recent engagement with UB’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Doreen Ramogola-Masire, the Government’s Deputy Permanent Secretary for Environment and Tourism, Ms Abigail Khumoyame, outlined plans to reposition urban areas as significant contributors to national tourism growth and economic diversification.
Ms Khumoyame explained that the initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to diversify the tourism sector.
Botswana is internationally renowned for its wildlife and safari experiences, especially in the Chobe region, but it is now turning focus toward underutilized urban areas in the south to stimulate economic growth.
Despite being the capital, Gaborone attracts limited tourist activity and short visitor stays, resulting in minimal economic benefits for the city.
The City Tourism initiative seeks to change this by promoting the cultural, historical, and lifestyle assets of urban centres, aiming to make them more appealing to international visitors and local residents alike.
Potential attractions include heritage sites, historic buildings, local cuisine, and entertainment venues that showcase the city’s unique character and offer diverse experiences.
Professor Ramogola-Masire expressed confidence in UB’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the initiative, citing the university’s expertise in research, innovation, and community engagement.
She underscored the importance of academic collaboration in supporting national development goals.
The Government also noted interest in further partnerships with UB to enhance the visibility and accessibility of urban tourism assets, thus contributing to a more inclusive and diversified tourism sector.
This pilot project reflects a forward-thinking approach to expanding Botswana’s tourism offerings beyond its natural heritage by integrating city experiences.
Leveraging the University of Botswana’s research capabilities and community ties, the initiative aims to develop sustainable tourism models benefiting both residents and visitors.
As the program launches, stakeholders anticipate new opportunities for economic development, cultural preservation, and urban revitalization.
The initiative aligns with global trends emphasizing the role of city tourism in national growth strategies, positioning Botswana’s urban centres as dynamic and attractive destinations.
Building on Botswana’s strong natural assets, this venture seeks to unlock additional tourism potential through vibrant urban experiences.
With this partnership, Botswana is poised to foster a more diversified and resilient tourism industry that contributes to the country’s long-term prosperity.
