MALAYSIA – Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) has partnered with prominent Asian payment platforms Alipay+ and Weixin Pay (known locally as WeChat Pay) to increase Chinese and regional tourist spending across Malaysia.
As the summer travel season begins, both Alipay+ and Weixin Pay are launching targeted campaigns aimed at promoting Malaysia as a preferred travel destination while encouraging cross-border spending through PayNet’s DuitNow QR ecosystem.
This collaboration allows tourists from China and other Asian countries to make convenient payments at over 2.5 million merchant locations across Malaysia by scanning DuitNow QR codes using their familiar mobile wallets such as AlipayCN, Weixin Pay, and other Alipay+ partner apps.
By enabling visitors to pay without currency exchange or downloading new apps, the initiative simplifies transactions and improves convenience for travelers exploring Malaysia’s diverse offerings.
PayNet’s Chief Marketing Officer, Gary Yeoh, noted that this integration benefits a wide range of Malaysian merchants, many of which are small and family-run businesses.
Accepting trusted foreign e-wallets via DuitNow QR opens these businesses to a broader base of international consumers, supporting economic activity and the local tourism sector.
To take advantage of this momentum, Alipay+ and Weixin Pay have introduced several promotional campaigns.
Alipay+ is running a Lucky Draw from June 26 to July 14, giving users a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Hong Kong, including tickets to a Premier League football match.
Additionally, the Eat, Play & Save campaign, running until September 30, offers discounts at selected food, beverage, and tourist attractions for AlipayCN and Alipay+ users.
Meanwhile, Weixin Pay’s interactive campaign from July 15 to September 15 encourages users to collect digital badges representing Malaysian culture, redeemable for discount coupons, alongside preferential foreign exchange rates throughout the year.
This partnership builds on DuitNow QR’s interoperability with payment systems in neighboring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, reinforcing Malaysia’s role as a regional leader in digital payment infrastructure.
Tourism Malaysia’s Director General, Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, emphasized that simplifying payment processes is essential for attracting more visitors and creating meaningful opportunities for local businesses.
With tourist arrivals steadily increasing, the collaboration between PayNet, Alipay+, and Weixin Pay is expected to significantly raise cross-border spending, improve visitor experiences, and contribute to Malaysia’s goal of becoming a top cashless travel destination in Asia.
