GLOBAL – The World Economic Forum has published a new report forecasting that the travel and tourism industry will generate approximately 30 billion tourist trips by 2034, while contributing an estimated US$16 trillion to the global GDP.
This contribution is expected to represent more than 11% of the total world economy, according to estimates from the World Travel & Tourism Council, highlighting the sector’s growing economic importance.
The report, titled Travel and Tourism at a Turning Point: Principles for Transformative Growth, reveals that the industry is expanding at a rate 1.5 times faster than the global economy.
This rapid growth is creating significant commercial opportunities worldwide, provided that critical challenges such as climate change, labor shortages, and infrastructure gaps are effectively addressed.

Regionally, Asia is poised to become the fastest-growing tourism economy, with the direct contribution of travel and tourism to GDP expected to exceed 7% across the region by 2034.
The report also highlights that India and China alone will account for more than 25% of all outbound international travel by 2030, reflecting the rising middle class and increasing mobility in these countries.
The World Economic Forum’s findings come at a pivotal moment for the travel and tourism sector, which faces complex challenges including environmental pressures, workforce shortages, and tensions between visitors and local communities.
The report outlines ten guiding principles aimed at transforming the industry through regenerative practices, innovative offerings, and holistic collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities.
