SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa is set to modernize its visa and border entry processes with the introduction of a fully digital Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, scheduled for rollout by the end of September 2025.
Announced by Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber, this innovative platform will initially apply to short-term tourist visits of up to 90 days, marking a significant step forward in streamlining travel procedures and enhancing visitor experience.
The new ETA system is designed to replace traditional visa application methods with a faster, more efficient digital process.
Travelers seeking to visit South Africa for tourism purposes will be able to apply online, receive approvals electronically, and gain entry without the need for physical documentation or lengthy embassy visits.
This shift aligns with global trends toward digital border management and reflects South Africa’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve service delivery.
Minister Schreiber emphasized that the ETA rollout is part of a broader government initiative aimed at modernizing immigration infrastructure, reducing administrative bottlenecks, and boosting the country’s competitiveness as a tourist destination.
“By embracing digital solutions, we aim to facilitate smoother, more secure travel while supporting economic growth through increased tourism,” he stated.
The system will initially target short-term visitors, including leisure tourists and business travelers staying up to 90 days.
Over time, the government plans to expand the ETA’s scope to cover other categories of travelers, further simplifying entry requirements and enhancing border security through integrated data analytics and risk assessment tools.
South Africa’s ETA initiative is expected to benefit multiple stakeholders. Tourists will enjoy greater convenience and predictability, while immigration authorities will gain improved oversight and operational efficiency.
The digital platform will also enable better tracking of visitor flows, aiding in resource allocation and policy planning.
This modernization effort comes amid growing competition in the global tourism market, where ease of access and streamlined visa processes play a critical role in destination choice.
By adopting the ETA system, South Africa positions itself alongside other leading countries that have successfully implemented electronic travel authorizations to attract international visitors.
The Department of Home Affairs is currently finalizing technical specifications and engaging with industry partners to ensure a smooth launch.
Public awareness campaigns will accompany the rollout to educate travelers and travel agents on the new procedures.
