Heineken to invest US$53M in revitalising over 600 UK community pubs

UK – Leading brewing brand Heineken has unveiled a £40 million (US$53 million) investment plan for its Star Pubs division, targeting the upgrade of more than 600 community pubs across rural and suburban areas in the UK.

The initiative highlights the company’s dedication to enhancing pub experiences and sustaining the social fabric of British communities, while also addressing environmental considerations.

As of 2025, refurbishment work has been completed or is underway at ten sites, with the funds also supporting the reopening of previously shuttered pubs.

The current investment is expected to create an additional 1,000-plus employment opportunities across the country.

A key feature of the investment is the integration of energy-efficiency measures to improve the sustainability of pubs.

Heineken aims to enhance the environmental footprint of its venues, aligning with growing consumer demand for eco-conscious hospitality.

Lawson Mountstevens, Managing Director of Star Pubs, said the strategy of consistent investment and the development of strong community-focused pubs has helped the business navigate recent challenges.

He stated that Heineken recognises the enduring popularity of well-run British pubs and views this significant inward investment as a strong vote of confidence in the sector’s future.

He added that even with financial pressures on households, people continue to prioritise trips to their local pub as a valued treat and a means of community connection.

He also noted that customers now demand a quality experience, with ambiance and comfort playing crucial roles in where people choose to spend their time and money.

The investment will fund refurbishments at over 600 pubs, approximately a quarter of the Star estate—with a focused push this year on 94 pubs, particularly in suburban areas.

The approach responds to shifting work patterns, as more people operate from home and increasingly favour outdoor spaces, a trend amplified by the pandemic.

Plans include expanding kitchen capacity and upgrading pub gardens to meet evolving expectations.

Heineken’s broader goal is to restore the number of operational outlets to pre-pandemic levels, addressing the decline in city centre footfall due to changes in commuting behaviour.

Meanwhile, other pub operators are also scaling up: Punch Pubs added 14 new venues to its portfolio in September 2024, bringing its total to 1,300 sites.
