The collaboration aims to introduce an all-electric air taxi service, enhancing regional connectivity with Archer’s cutting-edge aircraft.

ETHIOPIA – Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with US-based Archer Aviation to deploy its Midnight eVTOL aircraft in Ethiopia under Archer’s “Launch Edition” programme, marking an important a milestone in sustainable air mobility by introducing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology to the country.

Archer is set to deploy an initial fleet of Midnight “Launch Edition” aircraft to Ethiopian Airlines, supported by a dedicated team of Archer pilots, technicians, and engineers.

The company will also provide backend software infrastructure and front-end booking applications to facilitate urban air mobility operations during the initial rollout.

While the primary focus remains on establishing an air taxi network in the region using the Midnight aircraft, Archer and Ethiopian Airlines are also considering broader applications, including eco-tourism.

The partnership was formalized at a signing ceremony in Addis Ababa, with both parties working closely with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) to ensure a safe and efficient launch.

The initiative allows the company to demonstrate the Midnight aircraft’s capabilities, build operational experience, drive public acceptance, and generate early revenue.

Both companies plan to develop the air taxi network over time, with Archer providing Ethiopian Airlines with the necessary expertise for the initial deployment.

Alongside air taxi services, they will explore additional opportunities such as eco-tourism, leveraging the aircraft’s sustainability advantages.

Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized the airline’s commitment to advancing air mobility solutions that enhance connectivity and promote sustainable aviation in Africa.

He noted that the collaboration with Archer represents a significant step in integrating eVTOL technology into Ethiopia’s transportation network, with the goal of redefining regional travel and enabling efficient, eco-friendly mobility solutions.
