OMAN – Jabal Shams in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate has secured more than OMR 31 million (US$80.5 million) in strategic development projects designed to transform the mountain into an integrated tourism destination.
The initiatives include a breathtaking glass walkway overlooking the canyon, an open-air theatre, cultural gardens, and an upgraded 32-kilometre road with 172 lighting poles to improve safety and access.
Oman’s highest peak is getting a spectacular makeover.
Walking on Air: The Jabal Shams Waterfront Project
The crown jewel of the development is the OMR 11 million (US$28.6 million) Jabal Shams Waterfront Project, sprawling across 145,000 square metres.
Visitors will soon walk on air along a glass walkway suspended over the dramatic canyon, taking in views that will make hearts skip and cameras work overtime.
An open-air theatre and cultural garden will round out the experience, creating what officials hope will become one of Oman’s most Instagrammed locations.
The project alone is expected to generate annual revenues of OMR 1.26 million (US$3.3 million), create 309 jobs, and unlock 32 investment opportunities in tourism and services.
Road to the Sky Gets Major Upgrade
Getting to the top just got easier and safer.
The 32-kilometre Jabal Shams road is receiving OMR 20.2 million (US$52.5 million) in upgrades, enhancing connectivity between mountainous areas and tourist sites.
A 10-kilometre stretch will gain 172 lighting poles, improving safety for night-time travel and extending the hours visitors can explore this natural wonder.
A Vision for Sustainable Tourism
Sulaiman bin Hamad Al Sunaidi, Director General of the Interior Municipality, confirmed that the first phase is already underway, with the second phase launching immediately after completion.
He emphasized that these initiatives mark “a significant step in the development of Jabal Shams and strengthening its position as a distinctive tourist destination in Oman.”
The projects balance ambitious development with preservation of the mountain’s unique natural environment.
Economic Ripples Across Al Dakhiliyah
The benefits extend far beyond the mountain itself.
The developments will stimulate tourism and economic activity across Al Hamra and Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, supporting hospitality businesses, tourism services, and traditional crafts.
Local communities will play an increasingly active role in the region’s tourism economy as visitors flock to experience Oman’s highest peak in all its newly enhanced glory.
