UK – Jersey Mike’s Subs has forged a franchise deal to launch up to 400 fast-casual sandwich shops in the UK and Ireland.
This venture with JM Submarines UK, led by founder and board chairman Peter Cancro, represents the chain’s debut in Europe.
The first store is slated to debut this year, tapping into regions that prize premium ingredients and community ties.
Cancro expressed strong optimism about the markets’ potential, underscoring his enthusiasm to steer the beloved brand personally in these quality-focused areas.
With over 3,200 U.S.-centric outlets, Jersey Mike’s has long dominated North American QSR landscapes through fresh subs and charitable initiatives.
CEO Charlie Morrison views this as a landmark in the company’s expansion saga.
He praised Cancro as the ideal leader, crediting him with scaling from a single Jersey Shore spot to a North American powerhouse during nearly five decades as CEO.
Cancro’s journey began in 1975 when he acquired the original Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, at age 17. He guided the brand’s growth into a US$8 billion enterprise—equivalent to roughly £6.3 billion at current exchange rates—before transitioning to chairman in April 2025.
Last November, private equity giant Blackstone snapped up Jersey Mike’s for US$8 billion including debt, retaining Cancro’s substantial stake while pledging backing for domestic and global growth.
Morrison stepped into the CEO role last year, steering the ship amid accelerated ambitions. This transatlantic push aligns with QSR trends, where American chains like Subway and Pret A Manger thrive on customizable, grab-and-go fare.
UK and Irish consumers, accustomed to robust sandwich culture, could embrace Jersey Mike’s signature shredded meats, vinegar-drizzled rolls, and “give back” ethos—donating meals to local causes.
Experts predict strong uptake in urban hubs like London, Manchester, and Dublin, fueled by tourism rebounds and hospitality investments.
The model’s franchise-heavy structure minimizes risks, leveraging Cancro’s hands-on expertise to navigate regulations and tastes. As Blackstone fuels international forays, Jersey Mike’s joins peers in eyeing Europe’s £20 billion-plus sandwich sector.
This expansion bolsters the QSR segment’s allure for investors, blending proven scalability with cultural adaptability. For hospitality professionals tracking tourism-driven dining, it signals ripe opportunities in cross-border franchising.
