The service currently reaches over 30,000 households and more than 100,000 residents, with plans to extend coverage to additional DFW locations soo
USA – DoorDash and Flytrex have initiated a drone delivery operation in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) region of Texas, expanding upon a successful pilot program that completed over 1,000 deliveries.
This new service allows residents in parts of Little Elm and Frisco to order meals from dozens of local and national restaurants directly through the DoorDash app, with deliveries made by Flytrex’s autonomous drone fleet.
This launch marks Flytrex’s first integration with a third-party application, enabling customers to select drone delivery as an option during checkout.
The service currently reaches over 30,000 households and more than 100,000 residents, with plans to extend coverage to additional DFW locations soon.
Operating hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering one of the region’s most extensive drone delivery schedules.
Flytrex drones can carry up to 6.6 pounds per delivery, the highest payload capacity available in the area, allowing for family-sized meals and a variety of food items such as pizza, chicken wings, and ice cream.
Next-generation drone models are expected to increase this capacity to 8.8 pounds, further enhancing delivery efficiency and order size.
The drones fly autonomously at low altitudes and speeds around 30 knots, covering approximately five miles round trip.
They deliver orders by lowering them via tether to customers’ backyards or designated drop-off points, ensuring contactless and timely service.
To manage the complexity of overlapping delivery zones, Flytrex has implemented advanced drone traffic control technology.
This system allows multiple operators to safely serve nearby communities while automatically regulating flight paths, expanding suburban coverage without compromising safety.
The drone delivery initiative is part of DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics and automation division, which focuses on integrating autonomous solutions to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.
The partnership aims to make drone delivery a scalable and reliable option for everyday local commerce, reflecting a broader industry trend toward innovative, technology-driven food delivery methods.
Community response to the service has been positive, with residents appreciating the convenience and novelty of drone deliveries.
The project also supports local businesses by providing a new delivery channel and contributes to STEM-oriented community activities.
As drone delivery gains traction in Dallas-Fort Worth, DoorDash and Flytrex are positioning themselves at the forefront of this emerging market, offering a glimpse into the future of food delivery.
