OMAN – Barceló Mussanah Resort in Oman has significantly advanced its sustainability efforts by partnering with Ecobia Middle East to install a cutting-edge bio-digester that efficiently manages food waste, reduces harmful emissions, and produces organic fertilizer used across its extensive landscaped grounds.

Since taking over management in 2021 and rebranding the property to meet international standards, Barceló has aligned its operations with Oman’s national sustainability initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible hospitality.

The resort’s collaboration with Ecobia Middle East, facilitated through an agreement signed alongside OMRAN, addresses a critical environmental challenge in the hospitality sector: food waste management.

The bio-digester technology breaks down food waste on-site, eliminating unpleasant odors from garbage bags, reducing flies and pests, and minimizing the need for long-distance waste transportation to landfills.

This process significantly cuts methane and carbon dioxide emissions—two potent greenhouse gases associated with landfill decomposition—thereby contributing to the fight against climate change.

Beyond the clear environmental benefits, the bio-digester produces a valuable byproduct: a rich, 100% organic fertilizer. Barceló Mussanah Resort applies this nutrient-dense fertilizer across its expansive 230,000+ square meters of lush lawns and landscaped gardens.

This sustainable practice eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers, resulting in substantial cost savings and promoting healthier, chemical-free grounds maintenance that supports biodiversity and soil health.

Since assuming management of the resort in 2021, marking Barceló’s entry into the Sultanate of Oman, the company has undertaken extensive upgrades and rebranding efforts to elevate the property to international hospitality standards.

These efforts are closely aligned with Oman’s national sustainability goals, which emphasize environmental protection, resource efficiency, and sustainable tourism development.
