UAE – Yango Group, a global technology company, has initiated a pilot program for autonomous robot-powered food delivery at Expo City Dubai.
This initiative, operating over four months, involves last-mile delivery robots transporting meals from select cafés and restaurants to the Al Wasl Plaza office building.
The robots navigate urban areas using high-definition maps and an array of sensors, allowing them to plan routes in real-time, avoid obstacles, and yield to pedestrians, all while producing zero emissions and operating more quietly than traditional delivery vehicles.
The pilot is conducted within Expo City’s Urban Lab, a city-wide innovation-driven testbed dedicated to piloting and scaling solutions for sustainable urban development.
The controlled environment of Expo City provides an ideal setting for testing autonomous technologies, aligning with the city’s vision as a blueprint for future cities.
Dr. Amy Hochadel, Vice President of the Urban Lab, emphasized that the initiative is part of Expo City’s broader efforts to lower barriers to innovation and drive impact in the city space through structured and rigorous testing of innovative solutions.
Yango’s autonomous delivery robots are designed to operate efficiently in the Middle East’s challenging climate, including high temperatures.
According to Nikita Gavrilov, Regional Head of Autonomous Delivery Solutions at Yango, the robots have been rigorously tested to ensure functionality in temperatures ranging from -30°C to +60°C. This capability is crucial for maintaining consistent delivery services in the region.
The pilot program is currently available exclusively for deliveries to the Al Wasl 3 office building. Users can order meals through the Expo City Eats app, which facilitates food delivery services across the city.
Upon successful completion of the pilot, the service is expected to expand, delivering from more Expo City restaurants to all residents and commercial tenants in a full commercial rollout.
This initiative underscores Yango Group’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, aiming to transform the logistics landscape in the Middle East.
By integrating advanced technology into local markets, Yango is pioneering solutions that promise to revolutionize the delivery process, enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
