KENYA – Purple Elephant Ventures (PEV), a Nairobi-based venture studio, has raised US$4.5 million in seed funding, marking one of the largest tourism-tech rounds in African history.
PEV’s recent funding round has attracted notable investors, including Clear Creek Investment B.V., Klister Corp., Fede Pirzo-Biroli (founder of Playfair Capital), Anthony Rock, and Ian McCaig (former CEO of Lastminute.com).
This marks a significant step forward, highlighting the growing optimism in African travel tech startups and their potential to reshape the continent’s startup ecosystem through innovation.
The investment will fuel PEV’s mission to position Africa’s tourism industry as a global leader in regenerative tourism.
By developing state-of-the-art travel technology within Africa, PEV seeks to create a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable tourism sector.
Ben Peterson, Co-Founder and CEO of Purple Elephant Ventures, emphasized that this funding demonstrates the untapped potential within African tourism innovation.
With this financial backing, PEV is poised to revolutionize the sector through cutting-edge technology, aiming to foster economic growth while preserving Africa’s natural and cultural heritage.
Peterson expressed confidence in the bright future of sustainable tourism in Africa.
Following the pandemic, PEV has focused on tourism innovations that promote biodiversity, create sustainable livelihoods for local communities, and reduce the environmental impact of travel.
Through its venture studio model, PEV is developing hospitality SaaS solutions, sustainable procurement for tourism, and energy-efficient solutions for the hospitality sector, establishing new benchmarks for sustainable tourism across Africa.
In a short time, PEV has launched five impactful startups, each tackling critical gaps within the hospitality ecosystem.
The first is Nomad Africa, Kenya’s top travel publisher and local agency; Kijani Supplies, which offers eco-friendly hospitality supplies; Zafari, a booking platform streamlining African tourism operations; PowerTrip, a cleantech company providing energy-efficient appliances to hospitality businesses; and JOIN Africa, a venture supporting safari guides, created with Paul English, co-founder of Kayak.
The US$4.5 million raised will allow PEV to scale its existing portfolio and launch new ventures to address the tourism industry’s key challenges.
As a trailblazer in venture capital for tourism tech, PEV is paving the way for a flourishing, sustainable, and technologically advanced tourism ecosystem in Africa.
Kenya’s ongoing digital infrastructure improvements align well with PEV’s vision.
The government’s initiatives, such as expanding fibre optic connectivity and offering a digital nomad visa, foster the growth of tech-driven tourism.
Additionally, Kenya’s digitalization of governmental processes, including the launch of the Foreign Travel Management Information System (FOTIMS) in September 2024, further enhances efficiency and transparency in managing foreign travel approvals for government officials.
