Heraklion Airport schedules critical runway upgrades for enhanced safety, capacity

The week-long shutdown focuses on resurfacing, lighting improvements, and structural strengthening, ensuring the airport meets strict EU aviation standards as demand continues to rise.

GREECE – Heraklion Airport has announced a pivotal runway modernization project commencing January 2026, temporarily closing its primary runway from January 19 to 26 to boost safety, efficiency, and future air traffic handling on Crete’s bustling tourism gateway.

This initiative positions the airport as a stronger Mediterranean hub.

Essential Infrastructure Modernization

As Greece’s second-busiest airport, Heraklion handles peak summer surges exceeding 10 million passengers annually.

The week-long closure targets resurfacing, lighting upgrades, and structural reinforcements, ensuring compliance with stringent EU aviation standards amid rising demand.

These enhancements extend runway lifespan, reduce maintenance downtimes, and accommodate wider-body aircraft for long-haul routes.

Contingency Operations on Secondary Runway

The airport maintains full operations via its auxiliary runway, equipped for domestic and select international flights.

Safety protocols limit aircraft to those with 72-passenger maximum capacity, excluding larger jets to match the runway’s dimensions and load-bearing specs.

Daylight-only operations, from dawn to dusk, optimize work schedules during low-traffic night hours, minimizing broader disruptions.

Passenger Guidance and Travel Tips

Travelers face potential schedule tweaks and advise confirming flights 48 hours prior via airline apps or Heraklion’s portal. Check-in, baggage, and security remain fully operational, with added staff for peak-hour flow.

Expect minor taxiway queues on the shorter runway; arrive two hours early for buffer time.

Strategic Boost for Crete Tourism

This proactive upgrade aligns with Greece’s aviation expansion, supporting Kastelli’s new airport transition while sustaining Heraklion’s role. Enhanced capacity attracts more carriers, elevates passenger satisfaction, and fuels Crete’s economy through seamless connectivity to beaches, palaces, and cultural sites.

Greece Has Accelerated Tourism Infrastructure with US$2.7 Billion Nationwide Investments

Greece has launched comprehensive tourism upgrades beyond Heraklion Airport, allocating €2.3 billion (US$2.7 billion) for airports, marinas, and regional roads to sustain 2025’s record bookings surge.

These initiatives enhance connectivity and visitor appeal across islands and mainland.
