Grubhub expands autonomous robot delivery trial with Avride in Jersey City

This pilot represents a step toward expanding autonomous deliveries to more US markets, combining Grubhub’s marketplace, Wonder’s culinary innovation, and Avride’s robotics to deliver convenience and reliability.

USA – Grubhub has extended its collaboration with US autonomous vehicle startup Avride to pilot robot food deliveries from Wonder’s Jersey City location.

This marks the first time Grubhub offers autonomous delivery outside college campuses.

Customers ordering from Wonder through Grubhub can select Avride robot delivery when their address falls within the pilot’s eligible range.

The pilot leverages Avride’s AI-powered autonomous robots designed for urban navigation in diverse weather conditions.

The robots operate on a four-wheel chassis capable of rapid 180-degree turns, ensuring smooth deliveries on city sidewalks.

Wonder’s multi-restaurant model offers over 20 concepts, including Alanza, Tejas Barbecue, and Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson, with dishes made to order for quick delivery.

To date, Grubhub and Avride have completed over 100,000 robot deliveries on US campuses, notably at Ohio State University, home to the largest single-site robot food delivery program.

This pilot represents a step toward expanding autonomous deliveries to more US markets, combining Grubhub’s marketplace, Wonder’s culinary innovation, and Avride’s robotics to deliver convenience and reliability.

Grubhub has attracted significant investments from prominent partners, fueling its technological advancements and market expansion.

In early 2025, Wonder, a new food hall startup, acquired Grubhub for an enterprise value of US$650 million, comprising US$500 million in senior notes and US$150 million in cash.

The acquisition was backed by notable investors such as NEA, Accel, and GV, contributing to a capital raise of US$600 million for Wonder.

These strategic partnerships have enabled Grubhub to enhance its food ordering ecosystem, integrating multiple restaurant concepts and boosting customer access.

The investments support innovations like multi-restaurant ordering within a single transaction, autonomous delivery trials with Avride, and seamless payment integrations, driving growth and operational efficiency for the platform.

Grubhub has made substantial investments in technology, significantly enhancing performance and its bottom line.

In 2025, it strengthened integration with Block’s Square point-of-sale system, enabling restaurants to manage Grubhub orders directly through a unified platform, reducing operational complexity.

Grubhub also introduced Cash App Pay, offering customers flexible payment options and broadening its user base.

The expansion of autonomous delivery through a partnership with startup Avride has allowed Grubhub to complete over 100,000 robot deliveries at Ohio State University, streamlining delivery costs and improving service reliability.

These innovations have increased order efficiency, expanded customer reach, and supported sustainable growth.
