DoorDash launches SmartScale, a revolutionary hardware system to enhance restaurant order accuracy

The device integrates advanced weighing technology with intelligent predictive modeling to ensure that each prepared order aligns with expected contents before leaving the kitchen.

GLOBAL – DoorDash has unveiled SmartScale, a compact hardware system developed by DoorDash Labs to help restaurants enhance order accuracy and streamline kitchen operations.

The device combines precise weighing technology with intelligent predictive modeling to verify that prepared orders match expected contents before they leave the kitchen.

If discrepancies are detected, such as missing items or incorrect quantities, SmartScale sends real-time alerts to kitchen staff, enabling immediate corrections.

This proactive verification reduces errors, accelerates handoffs to Dashers, and ensures customers receive exactly what they ordered, improving satisfaction and reducing support claims.

The system has been shown to cut missing item claims by up to 30%, based on DoorDash’s internal data from August 2024 to April 2025.

Measuring less than a standard cutting board, SmartScale is designed for busy commercial kitchens, compact enough to fit on countertops without disrupting workflow, yet durable enough to withstand high-volume environments.

Harrison Shih, Head of Product for DoorDash Labs, emphasized that SmartScale requires minimal operational changes while delivering significant benefits.

It reduces errors, saves staff time, and gives merchants and consumers greater confidence in every delivery,” he said.

The system also improves Dasher arrival timing by signaling when an order is weighed and ready, enhancing on-time performance.

Panera Bread is the first national restaurant chain to deploy SmartScale across all U.S. locations for third-party delivery, drive-thru, and first-party digital orders.

Since implementation, Panera has reported a 42% reduction in guest-reported missing items and 98% improved delivery accuracy in test cafes.

The SmartScale is easy to use, takes up virtually no counter space, and delivers unprecedented results,” said Meenakshi Nagarajan, Chief Digital Officer at Panera Bread.

Beyond accuracy, SmartScale functions as an operational command center.

The Achievements Modal tracks adoption and performance across stores, while the Order Manager add-on allows staff to contact customers, process refunds, and make substitutions, all from one interface.

The technology also supports future delivery innovations, including drones and DoorDash’s autonomous robot, Dot, by ensuring precise order verification. SmartScale is currently rolling out with select partners, with broader availability planned soon.
