This represents a 21% year-on-year increase and includes payments made by Wilderness and its guests across seven African countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

AFRICA – Conservation tourism operator Wilderness has reported its highest-ever annual payment to governments and communities, totaling US$17.1 million in the 2025 financial year.

This figure marks a 21% increase compared to the previous year and reflects payments made by Wilderness and its guests across seven African nations: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Over the last ten years, these contributions have amounted to US$97 million, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to supporting local livelihoods and conservation efforts.

The funds are directly invested in protected area management and rural development across approximately 2.3 million hectares where Wilderness operates.

This conservation model centers on sharing economic value with communities living adjacent to critical wildlife habitats.

By engaging local populations as active partners, Wilderness promotes community ownership of conservation initiatives and contributes to sustainable development, helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict while fostering economic growth.

Beyond direct financial contributions, Wilderness actively invests in impactful programs that reinforce its conservation goals.

These include anti-poaching support which equips and deploys rangers, improving law enforcement and surveillance to protect endangered species in the regions it operates.

More broadly, the company supports community-led conservation efforts that integrate traditional knowledge with modern practices.

The company also runs youth education and environmental awareness programs designed to nurture future conservation champions and empower the next generation with skills and knowledge related to biodiversity preservation.

Vocational training centers provide valuable opportunities for local people to gain expertise in tourism-related sectors such as hospitality, guiding, and wildlife management, driving job creation and economic resilience.

Wilderness’s integrated approach exemplifies how tourism can deliver ecological, social, and economic benefits simultaneously.

By channeling financial flows into communities and conservation activities, Wilderness addresses the interconnected challenges of wildlife preservation, poverty alleviation, and rural development.

The record US$17.1 million contribution in 2025 highlights Wilderness’s leadership in responsible tourism.

It sets a replicable example for the global travel industry by demonstrating how sustainable tourism can generate shared value among ecosystems, wildlife, and people.

As global demand for eco-conscious travel accelerates, Wilderness’s decade-long efforts provide a comprehensive blueprint for embedding conservation success into profitable tourism operations across Africa’s diverse and vulnerable protected landscapes.
