Africa leads global tourism recovery in early 2025 with 9% growth, 16% surpass of pre-pandemic arrivals – UN Tourism

Key markets such as South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, and Egypt have been instrumental in driving this growth, supported by enhanced air connectivity, targeted marketing efforts, and investments in tourism infrastructure.

GLOBAL – Worldwide tourism continued its recovery in early 2025, with international arrivals rising by 5% year-on-year in the first quarter, according to the UN Tourism’s May 2025 World Tourism Barometer released earlier this week.

Africa stood out as the leading growth region, recording a strong 9% increase in arrivals and surpassing pre-pandemic numbers by an impressive 16%.

This robust performance positioned Africa ahead of other major regions, including Europe and the Americas, which each experienced a modest 2% growth, and the Middle East, which saw a 1% rise in international arrivals.

The continent’s success underscores its rising prominence as a premier destination amid the ongoing global tourism rebound.

Africa’s tourism resurgence is fueled by its diverse offerings, from iconic wildlife safaris and rich cultural heritage to vibrant urban centers and idyllic coastal retreats.

Key markets such as South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, and Egypt have been instrumental in driving this growth, supported by enhanced air connectivity, targeted marketing efforts, and investments in tourism infrastructure.

UNWTO analysts highlighted that Africa’s ability to exceed pre-pandemic arrival levels by such a margin reflects a resilient and dynamic tourism sector.

Factors contributing to this include pent-up travel demand, competitive pricing, and innovative tourism products that appeal to a broad spectrum of travelers.

In comparison, Europe’s slower growth rate is attributed to economic uncertainties and variable travel regulations, while the Americas continue a steady recovery driven by strong domestic and regional travel.

The Middle East’s modest increase is linked to geopolitical considerations, although long-term tourism development remains a priority.

The World Tourism Barometer’s findings emphasize Africa’s critical role in the global tourism recovery, signaling increased opportunities for investment and sustainable development across the continent.

This growth trajectory is expected to bolster local economies and communities, further enhancing Africa’s appeal to international travelers.

As the global tourism industry continues to rebound, Africa’s leading position offers valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to capitalize on emerging trends and market dynamics.

The continent’s remarkable growth highlights its expanding influence and potential within the worldwide travel landscape.
